Walkathon Provocation

Provocation:
Use the Walkathon results from each 5/6 Homegroup to answer the following provocation
1.       Collate the results into 2 different types of graphs.
·          1 must be hand drawn in your maths books. 1 can be done on your laptops and submitted on USB.
·         Examples: Column graphs, dot plots, line graphs, side-by-side column graphs*
2.       Calculate the mean and mode averages for each Homegroup and the whole 5/6 neighbourhood.*
a)      Which class had the highest mean average?
b)      What was the most common number of laps completed for the 5/6 neighbourhood?
c)       Justify whether you think the mean or mode average is the best representation for your homegroup?
3.       Answer the following:
d)      We have measured the perimeter of the course as _____________. What distance did someone who did 30 laps cover?
e)      Using the same perimeter and your calculation of the mode average for your homegroup, what was the most common distance covered?

Success Criteria:
1.       2 different types of graphs.
·         1 MUST be in hand drawn in your Maths book
·         1 graph must show all of the data from the entire neighbourhood.
·         Must meet conventions of graphs: title, key, labelled axis, ruled lines, border
2.       In Maths books you must record the Mean and Mode average for each homegroup and clearly label these
E.g. In 5/6 P Mean Average was______. The mode average was_____.
Record your answers 2a, b, c in your maths book & show your working.
3. Show your working to calculate 3a and 3b in your maths books.

Ideas for information to graph:

·         The mean average numbers of laps completed per class
·         The mode average number of laps completed per class
·         The range of distance completed per class
·         The highest and lowest number of laps completed per class
·         The range in your class
·         Your class’s average compared to another homegroup
·         The total number of laps completed per class
·         The total distance completed per class
·         The mean average distance completed per class
·         The mode average distance completed per class

AND MANY MORE OPTIONS….

** You may need to do some calculations to find interesting information to graph **
