Flexible Solar Cells and more

News: Kirigami steers solar panels
When you’re installing solar panels, it’s important to point them at the Sun. But the Sun isn’t always in the same place – it moves across the sky over the course of a day. If you can aim the panels towards the Sun as it moves, they can produce up to 40 per cent more power than if they are stationary. But it’s hard to aim a big, flat solar panel: especially when it’s attached to your roof.

A team of United States researchers had an idea to solve this problem. Instead of using flat solar panels, they thought they could use flexible solar cells that can bend to face the light.

The researchers approached Matt Shilan, a paper artist and engineer, who helped them create patterns based on kirigami: the ancient Japanese art of paper cutting and folding. Starting with paper, and then moving on to a flexible plastic called Kapton, they tested many designs.

They found that the best design was also the simplest. It contained many dashed lines of cuts, which opened up into a lattice when stretched out. As the holes opened, the surface of the plastic tilted at an angle: perfect for pointing at the Sun.

Once they’d decided on the design, the research team was ready to make the real thing. They took some flexible solar cells, attached them to a piece of Kapton and cut their design. By stretching and releasing the panel, they could aim it at the Sun, collecting 38 percent more power than a normal, stationary panel.

It could be a while before you see Kirigami solar panels on a roof near you, though. A lot more research is needed yet, such as finding out how to build a supporting structure, and how to protect the panels from harsh weather conditions.

Student Application for Junior School Leadership Positions

There are two parts to the process. For the first part of the process the students write an application letter in which they address five of the ten qualities of leadership listed below, using concrete examples to evidence these qualities.

Students are encouraged to draw on people in their lives who can support their application, for example teachers, team coaches and parents.

Student Leaders Project Brief

Lunchtime activity plan

Your group’s task is to prepare a lunchtime activity that can be implemented in 2016
You must consider the following factors:

            What resources/spaces will you need?
Which day will the activity take place?
What support will you need from teaching staff?
How would you advertise the activity?

The current JSC leaders are happy to help you with your application and project.

Due date for your application: By  11 am on Monday 30thh of November to Tim.  Your project group will be presenting on Monday 30th of November @ 2.30. You must address 5 of the 10 qualities of a leader.

Hi everyone,

In the spirit of racing, the bell is ringing with this final reminder for what we need over the coming week as we head into the home straight for the Bazaar being held next Sunday 15th October!

You will have seen the blog and hopefully received the handout about registering on the Bazaar Online Rostering System for helping on a stall/s for the day.  If you haven't done so already, please try and help out for an hour or more and register at http://volunteer.phpsbazaar.org

This is also the week to get your donations is for the Spinning Wheel Hamper and soft drinks please.   Tubs will remain in the classroom until middle of next week so if you haven't already, please find time on the weekend to get something and send in with the children (or yourself) to fill our tubs up.

Finally,  the Supertreats/unlimited rides forms pre-sales close on Wednesday 11th November so if you want to take advantage of the upfront deal and make your life easy on the day with kids looking after themselves and not hassling you for money for rides and/or food, get the forms in by then!

Please come back to me with any questions or contact the committee directly at info@phpsbazaar.org

Thanks and enjoy the weekend ... Sarah

What's Hapening

Hi everyone,

A quick update for the Bazaar this week ....

The most important one is for everyone to get onto the online Bazaar Rostering system which was sent out via Compass during the week and sign-up to help out at a stall on the day.   Our class is already at 50% (so thankyou to those of you who have already signed-up) and if we are the first to get to 100% the class gets a pizza party!   Only one other class is at the same level as us so let's try and get there first!

The Photo Marathon closes for registration today so if you want to be part of this,  register using the following link - photomarathon.phpsbazaar.org

A reminder the tubs for the  Spinning Wheel Hamper donations are in the class room and our theme for 5/6T is "Hamp it up" so we are looking for donations such as gourmet foods, alcohol tableware and cookware - oils, spices, wines, pasta, condiments, preserves, pasta sauces, chocolate and sweets, serving dishes, cookbooks, tableware, cooking utensils.

Finally,  the Supertreats/unlimited rides forms should have landed at home this week and pre-sales are open until Wednesday 11th November so if you're up for a discount, take advantage of this option!!!  And corflute signs to promote the Bazaar are now available from the office.

Next week ...

More tubs will enter the classroom, this time for donations for drinks to sell on the day.  For our class, we have been asked to donate canned soft drinks, so if you happen to be shopping this long weekend, grab a slab of soft drink in preparation!!

Please come back to me with any questions or contact the committee directly at info@phpsbazaar.org

Thanks again for your support ... Sarah

Bazaar Reminders

Hi everyone,

With only 4 weeks until the Bazaar is upon us, being held on Sunday 15th November (just in case not locked into your memory!), it is time for us all to gear up and help where we can to make the 2015 Bazaar another successful, fun-filled day out for our children, ourselves, family and friends!

You should have received the Bazaar Survival Kit which has key information and dates for how we can support this fabulous event and what you need to know to be ready, but I will keep you updated with friendly reminders as we countdown!

This week ...

A new event being organised by our children, the Photo Marathon, opened for registration.  To register , follow this link - photomarathon.phpsbazaar.org

Tubs have been placed in the classrooms for the Spinning Wheel Hamper donations.  The theme for 5/6T is "Hamp it up" and we are looking for donations such as gourmet foods, alcohol tableware and cookware - oils, spices, wines, pasta, condiments, preserves, pasta sauces, chocolate and sweets, serving dishes, cookbooks, tableware, cooking utensils.   I think if we all make an effort to contribute to this Hamper, it will attract alot of interest and be a fantastic prize for someone on the day!

Next week ...

The online rostering system for stalls and times to help out will go out and my advice to everyone is try and find a friend to man a stall with so you can catch up at the same time, and once you find this friend, get onto this system as first in best dressed!!!  It is really important we all do our bit to help out on the day so please find time to show your support ...

You may also be harrassed by your children next week with the Supertreats/unlimited rides forms landing on your kitchen bench (or maybe check the school bag if you have a forgetful child!)

And finally, next week you can help promote the Bazaar in your area by grabbing Bazaar corflute sign from the office and attach in a prominent place on to your front fence for all to see!

I know this may be the last Bazaar as parents with children at PHPS for some on you, so want to thankyou in advance for you support over the years and hope we can top it off this year with us all doing our bit to make 2015 another great event for our community!

Please come back to me with any questions or contact the committee directly at info@phpsbazaar.org

Have a great weekend, thanks ... Sarah
