Provocation:
Use the Walkathon results from each 5/6 Homegroup to answer the following provocation
1.       Collate the results into 2 different types of graphs.
·          1 must be hand drawn in your maths books. 1 can be done on your laptops and submitted on USB.
·         Examples: Column graphs, dot plots, line graphs, side-by-side column graphs*
2.       Calculate the mean and mode averages for each Homegroup and the whole 5/6 neighbourhood.*
a)      Which class had the highest mean average?
b)      What was the most common number of laps completed for the 5/6 neighbourhood?
c)       Justify whether you think the mean or mode average is the best representation for your homegroup?
3.       Answer the following:
d)      We have measured the perimeter of the course as _____________. What distance did someone who did 30 laps cover?
e)      Using the same perimeter and your calculation of the mode average for your homegroup, what was the most common distance covered?

Success Criteria:
1.       2 different types of graphs.
·         1 MUST be in hand drawn in your Maths book
·         1 graph must show all of the data from the entire neighbourhood.
·         Must meet conventions of graphs: title, key, labelled axis, ruled lines, border
2.       In Maths books you must record the Mean and Mode average for each homegroup and clearly label these
E.g. In 5/6 P Mean Average was______. The mode average was_____.
Record your answers 2a, b, c in your maths book & show your working.
3. Show your working to calculate 3a and 3b in your maths books.

Learning Experiences

In Literacy last week the students completed an online Progressive Assessment Test.  This is one of the formal assessments conducted each year.  The focus of the test is to assess the students' comprehension ability.

The students also completed a written piece connected to our continuing investigation of the Murray-Darling Basin.

What's Happening

Author Alice Zaslavsky (a.k.a Alice in Frames) will be talking to students on Friday 29 May 9-10 am
about her debut book Alice’s Food A-Z, life on MasterChef and most importantly food and cooking.

Books for Cooks (Lucy White 5/6’s parents) will have copies of Alice’s Food A-Z
available for purchase by students and signing.  The book is $19.95.  A copy will be at the office for perusal.

Here’s what Books for Cooks had to say in ‘Australian Bookseller & Publisher’

“Too often childrens’ cookbooks, particularly middle primary school age, are just bad collections of cheesy cheap content and recipes for happy faces on pizza; which makes finding a good food book for your 6-11 year old child, relative, god-child or ‘inner-child’ very difficult – until now!   Alice Zaslavsky is a Melbourne based qualified middle school teacher who made it through to the finals of MasterChef Series 5 – the one with the ‘big glasses’!  Alice’s Food A-Z is an engaging, personal, fun and healthy introduction to food that will intrigue kids, adults – even picky eaters!  Alice’s zany sense of humour percolates throughout (think Andy Griffiths meets Heston Blumenthal) and her 40 recipes scattered over 26 A-Z foodie chapters illustrate good cooking techniques in snacks and easy dishes without being preachy.  Liberally seasoned with interesting & engaging ‘facts’, ‘tips’ and ‘whys guys’ breakout sections this is a great balanced introduction to food, food science, cooking and health for young readers.  The ‘What to look for’ sections are perfect primers to make better food shoppers.  Perfect for home, the layout will also suit lesson plans and school activities.”

Dear Parent/Carer/Guardian(s)

Re: Verso

As you may be aware our school has been looking into the use of a new Online Service called Verso (the Online Service) which is operated by Learnology (the Service Provider).

The school will use Verso to develop provocations for students.  Students respond to rich media and questions promoting deep learning and peer feedback.  The Verso app will support the discussions already taking place within projects and provocations, providing a place for students to interact with media, answer questions and respond to discussions.  They will have an opportunity to respond to other students’ comments providing for deep conversations about learning. This app is being offered to us through the Department of Education and Training.

Should you wish to know more about the Service Provider and the Online Services you canhttp://versoapp.com/terms
