Learning Experiences

MATHS PROJECTS
The students are about to begin their first maths project, thinking about and investigating how they use maths each day. The teachers and students have collaborated to develop the expectations for this project, which will be compiled by the teachers and presented next week.
Learning Goal:
To understand the value of maths in my daily life.
Task:
To investigate and record all of the maths I use or encounter in my daily life.
The students watched a short video, called 'Real Life Math' to get them thinking about the kinds of maths they might use or come across.
This is a home-school learning activity, so expect to see students engaged with this task at home over the next couple of weeks.

What's Happening

In Literacy the students have begun their Writer's Notebook by writing down the thoughts, feelings, wonderings and writing possibilities connected to a stimulus.  As the weeks continue the students will be bringing in more ideas to aid their writing.  These ideas will be developed into written pieces.

This week as part of our inquiry the students thought about collaboration as it exists outside of school. This week they looked at collaboration in the field of medicine.  Their thoughts were displayed for the neighbourhood to view.

Genius Projects are under way.  The students have been developing their topic with a focus on the learning they will be sharing with the neighbourhood and the steps they will take as the projects develop.

What We Have Been Up to in the 5/6 Neighbourhood

Learning experiences

In the 5/6 Neighourhood we are exploring the idea that ‘I am stronger as part of a collective than I am as an individual.’

The Neighbourhood has started their Inquiry by:

  • Developing a concept of collaboration and understanding the benefits of working with others.

  • Thinking about how communities of expertise collaborate to solve problems.

  • Understanding and appreciating ourselves as individuals and valuing the contributions we bring to the group.

The students have been involved in many learning experiences, such as writing their own Manifesto, presenting important and personal artefacts, thinking about the groups they belong to, thinking about how they collaborate with each other and discussing the pros and cons of collaboration.

Within literacy the students have begun exploring the nature of persuasive texts and how they can express their point of view. In numeracy the students have been thinking about how they see themselves as mathematicians. They have also begun to further develop their strategies for solving written problems.

Other highlights thus far have included the commencement of the Little Devils Circus program and competing or cheering others on at the Swimming Carnival. The students have also just begun to develop their own Genius Projects as a way of exploring personal passions and interests.

Stay tuned for more next week.

Have a great weekend.

Welcome to the 5/6 Neighbourhood Blog

Hello 5/6 Families!

Welcome to the neighbourhood and to our wonderful blog!

The blog is a way to communicate quickly and easily between the teachers, students and the 5/6 neighbourhood community as well as to promote the learning that the students are engaged in.

We are doing things a little differently this year and each post will have an indication of what you can expect.

Below are the indicator-words to look for, which will highlight the importance or category of each post:

·      Action Required - excursion notices, special days or other important information.
·      What’s Happening - ideas from the teachers' planning & upcoming events.
·      Learning Experiences - examples of the students' work & reflections on their learning.

We still have a little way to go before our blog is running smoothly, so in the meantime please bear with us and remember to check in on a regular basis.

Thank you for reading and we look forward to hearing from about how the blog is working for you.

From the 5/6 teaching team,

Kate, Mary, Paula, Tim and Warrick.

Site Under Construction

Hello 5/6 Families!

Welcome to our neighbourhood blog. At present we are updating this site so please bear with us while we endeavour to get it up and running as soon as possible.

We look forward to using this as a way to communicate daily business and, importantly, to reflect the learning that is happening within the neighbourhood.

From the 5/6 Team (Tim, Warrick, Paula, Mary and Kate)
