What's Happening

In Literacy this week we created graphic overlays to look at the different organisational features of an explanation text and how they function to enhance meaning.

We continued to focus on spelling by investigating how a base word can change when a suffix is added. The students collected, grouped and analysed words and then drew conclusions about different spelling patterns.

We continued our investigation into the Murray-Darling Basin by discussing salinity, water quality and water testing.

The students continue to record unfamiliar words as they appear in different sources and then predict and confirm the meaning. Synonyms are also looked for.

Home Learning suggestion:

-          Start identifying and recording unfamiliar words, wherever they may appear by creating a home vocabulary log.  This could be done digitally.

What's Happening

In Literacy this week we revisited the use of persuasive devices to enhance the writer’s position and to persuade the reader.  We also discussed the idea of the audience and the writer’s capacity to orient, engage and persuade the reader.

We have continued to develop a group understanding around the issue of water.  This will be an ongoing focus in the coming weeks.

This week we looked at the Murray-Darling Basin and the how data can be collated and used to support a writer’s position.  Building content knowledge also allows students to engage more with a text. The students worked in expert groups where they focused on a section of the text. They then shared their new understanding with another group.  The students collaborated and supported each other throughout the process.

Happy Mother’s Day and have a great weekend.

Numeracy Home Learning

Thursday May 7th - Home Learning - DUE MONDAY 11TH MAY (9 a.m.)
Learning Intention: To solve problems that involve area and perimeter.
Language: perimeter (peri=around; metre = to measure, so to find the perimeter means to measure around. area = amount of surface area.

Suppose you have a strip of wood that is 100 centimetres long, and you want to make a rectangular picture frame using all of your wood.
  1. What are several different dimensions that are possible for your frame?
  2. What frame would you make if you wanted to enclose the greatest area? Explain how you decided.

Watch these Maths Antics videos to help you understand the concepts of area and perimeter:

What's Happening

This week in Literacy the students have identified the implied messages in explanation texts and justified their response with evidence.  The students have continued to build and identify spelling patterns, including onset and rimes and syllables.  The students’ personal spelling lists are continuing to grow.

ICT was imbedded in the Literacy focus to support the students’ understanding of writing conventions and also the issues around water.

The students identified areas of future research and learning based on their comprehension of an explanation of the water cycle.

This week in Numeracy the students have presented the final stage of their My Mathematical Life Project. There were a great variety of presentation styles, from puppet shows and PowerPoint presentations to narrative stories and eye-catching posters. The presentations have been a fantastic example of the value this project has had in demonstrating that maths is an integral part of everyday life. It has also shown the students how their attitude towards maths can greatly impact on their learning, with many saying this project has helped to boost their feelings about their own mathematical ability.

The learning focus in Numeracy this week was "To be able to interpret problems in part-part-whole terms using addition and subtraction."
The students have been explicitly taught the 'part-part-whole' strategy to help them identify whether they are working to find the 'whole' or the 'part' within any given problem and to make the necessary links to addition and subtraction. The aim is also to highlight the narrative nature of mathematical problem solving.
