What's Happening

Student Science and Sustainability Committee

In Term 3 the student Science and Sustainability Committee will begin having regular weekly meetings.

When: 11:10 each Monday
Where: the 5/6 Discussion Room.

Our first meeting will be on Monday 20th July (Week 2).

Learning Experiences

In Literacy we have begun investigating areas of government and the Australian parliament. This week these included the role of the Prime Minister and other members of parliament and how individual members of the community can become active citizens and contribute to change. The literacy skills we are continuing to develop include the ability to identify the main ideas and supporting evidence in a text, scanning texts for key facts, summarising and understanding how textual features contribute to an increased understanding.

All students are reminded to have a text at school that they can be using for independent reading.

What's Happening

Pirate Day Friday

Friday the 19th of June is Pirate Day Friday.

We would like everybody to dress up as a pirate and bring in a gold coin donation, even parents and teachers if they want to.

Pirate Day Friday raises awareness and money for childhood brain cancer research. We chose to support Pirate Day Friday because more children die in Australia from childhood brain cancer than any other disease.

On Friday all students will bring in a gold coin donation and then receive a white-eye patch to decorate on the day. We hope to see you all dressed up as pirates this Friday.

Yours Sincerely,

The Junior School Council Leaders

Learning Experiences

In Literacy this week the students have continued to build an understanding of water, our waterways and the issues affecting them.  Freshwater macroinvertebrates are one tool scientists use to measure water quality.  Using the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre’s online identification guide the students identified key information about different species and what this means about a river’s health.

By responding to an explanation text the students built their understanding of land degradation.

Our grammar focus was clauses and how they convey meaning.

Spelling investigations and the development of independent writing pieces are ongoing focuses.
